Interviews conducted for this class (i.e. cognitive interview and pre-test of questionnaire module) must meet IRB requirements for administrative review.  The three basic requirements for this are that you

(a) do not interview minors,

(b) maintain confidentiality of all information (that is, do not record any information on identity of respondents in such a way that it can be linked to their responses), and

(c) do not ask for information that – if disclosed - could reasonably place the subjects at risk of criminal or civil liability, or be damaging to the subjects' financial standing, employability, or reputation.

There are three options for documenting compliance:

(1) If you already have IRB approval for your project, you should (a) send me your IRB approval number, and (b) file a modification/ addendum request if the cognitive interview and pre-tests required for this class were not included in your original application to IRB.

(2) If you plan to use the questionnaire module develop in this class for your research in the future, then you should go ahead and submit a request for administrative review to IRB.  I have already discussed this possibility with IRB staff, and I will be happy to work with you to draft an IRB application for this very early stage of your research.

(3) If you are not sure whether the questionnaire that you develop in this class will have a close relationship to your future research (i.e., you are using this class to develop initial ideas that will not necessarily carry forward into your research), then you simply need to follow the three guidelines above, documenting how you are doing this in your weekly progress reports.
